La primera versión biplaza del MiG-21 era el MiG-21U (uchebnyy, o biplaza), conocida por la OTAN como "Mongol-A". Se distinguía de las versiones posteriores (MiG-21US y UM, o "Mongol-B") por el estabilizador vertical más estrecho, propio de las variantes iniciales de interceptor.
