Originariamente conocido como De Havilland 114, el Heron es un derivado del bimotor Dove diseñado en base de una construcción simple y un fácil mantenimiento. Capaz de llevar 16 pasajeros, de este pequeño cuatrimotor se construyeron 150 ejemplares prestando servicio en una treintena de países, entre ellos España. Uno de estos aviones sufrió un accidente al caer de noche al mar frente a las costas de Castelldefels poco antes de llegar al aeropuerto del Prat, pereciendo todos sus ocupantes.
