Este DC-9 fue uno de los 4 serie 33RC (=Rapid Change) que Iberia vendió a la US Navy (matrículas EC-BYK/L/M/N) en 1990. Eran DC-9s convertibles a cargueros entregados en 1972 que Iberia pretendía trasapasar a Cargosur cuando fundó esta filial de carga pero la buena cantidad de dinero ofrecido por los yanquis (se habló de unos $36 millones de la época por el lote) les hizo cambiar de opinión.

Recién entregados a la Base de la NAVY de Patuxent River dos de estos aviones, este fue dedicado al “Project Birdseye” (que aun continua hoy día) formando parte del primer Oceanographic Development Squadron VXN-8 que apoyó ese programa. Instrumentado especialmente para la observación oceanográfica y el seguimiento de sus parámetros medioambientales esenciales, estuvo volando hasta finales de los 80. En Gando era visto periódicamente con esta vistosa librea y creo que lo apodaron “el coyote” (Colección Juan Arráez)

Fue la última jornada de PPAA en esta base de los Marines antes de su cierre. Aquí vemos uno de los Blue Angels que nos obsequiaron con su show. c/n 207/A167. Avión ya retirado del servicio y actualmente expuesto en el Air Zoo museum situado en Kalamazoo / Battle Creek (Michigan).

me lo vuelvo a encontrar, entonces en el Forrestal y ahora embarcado en el CVN-73 George Washington, si bien ya ha sido transformado de F-14A a F-14B al instalarle los GE F110-400. Tras dejar el escuadrón VF-11 pasó por el VF-103 y en el momento de hacerle la foto pertenecía al VF-143 Pukin Dogs. Nose modex 104
